An ITP turns the specification into a checklist of what gets inspected, when, by whom and against what criteria. This template gives quality and site teams a clear record of hold points, witness points and sign-offs.

What's inside

  • Activity and reference to spec/standard
  • Inspection/test type and acceptance criteria
  • Hold (H) / Witness (W) / Surveillance (S) point classification

How to use it

  • Hold points stop work until released — make sure the right person is notified in advance.
  • Tie every line back to a spec clause or standard so the acceptance criteria aren't arguable.
  • File the verifying record (photo, test cert, docket) against the line as it's signed off.

Frequently asked

What is an ITP in construction?

An Inspection and Test Plan lists the inspections and tests for an activity, the acceptance criteria, who performs and verifies them, and which are hold, witness or surveillance points. It's how quality is demonstrated rather than assumed.

What is the difference between a hold point and a witness point?

Work cannot proceed past a hold point until it's inspected and released. A witness point gives a party the opportunity to attend an inspection, but work can continue if they don't — the inspection still happens and is recorded.
